The Chiropractic Approach

Chiropractic continues to be the most utilized form of alternative medicine in the United States. When the profession began in 1895, the focus was primarily on musculoskeletal complaints. However, in more recent years the chiropractic physician has come to recognize that a variety of other factors can be treated through the scope of chiropractic medicine. In recent years, chiropractic physicians have taken up residence among medical doctors as primary care physicians, and the effects of this movement have been enormously beneficial for patient's health.

The chiropractic approach to healthcare is holistic, stressing the patient's overall health and wellness. It recognizes that many factors affect health, including exercise, diet, rest, environment, and heredity. Chiropractors provide natural, non- surgical treatments and rely on the body's inherent ability to heal itself. Chiropractors also educate their patients on lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, and sleeping habits.

While there are many avenues available and utilized by chiropractors to affect the health of the patient population, the chiropractic physician strives to be an expert in the musculoskeletal system and the neurological system. Like other health practitioners, chiropractors follow a standard routine to secure the information they need for diagnosis and treatment. They take the patient's medical history, conduct physical, neurological, and orthopedic examinations, and may order laboratory testing or advanced diagnostic imaging if necessary. The majority of diagnosis happening in the chiropractic office can be done without invasive testing. If the physical and examination reveal results that indicate the need for further testing, appropriate testing will be ordered.

Chiropractic Manipulative Therapy refers to a specific, gentle, high velocity low amplitude force applied to a joint in order to restore appropriate function and movement to an otherwise dysfunctional joint complex. The chiropractic adjustment stimulates the nervous system and promotes relaxation of the surrounding musculature which contributes to overall pain relief. Chiropractic adjustments are used to re-establish joint mobility. The effectiveness of the chiropractic adjustment has been studied thoroughly over the years and proven to be effective for pain relief for a number of conditions.
